What is Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?
Essentially, tummy tuck surgery, or to refer to its more technical term — abdominoplasty surgery, is a surgical corrective procedure that aims to flatten a protruding stomach at the same time as tightening any excess abdominal skin. This type of problem may have been caused by a number of factors including weak abdominal muscles that do not respond to exercises such as sit ups; weight gain that cannot be reduced through dieting; and the after effects of pregnancy.
For many people for whom the problem of a protruding stomach cannot be corrected through either diet or exercise, abdominoplasty surgery is often the best alternative. However, as the procedure is a relatively major one, we will need to take an extensive medical history of clients considering this surgery.
Surgery
In general, tummy tuck surgery will be performed with the patient under general anaesthetic. The particular situation of each patient will determine whether they are admitted as an outpatient or inpatient in addition to how long the abdominoplasty surgery will take. This can be as little as one hour but can stretch to five.
The procedure begins with the Surgeon making an incision as close to the bikini line as possible. This is to ensure the remaining scars can be effectively covered by underwear. Next, the skin is drawn back to reveal the loose tissue covering the abdominal muscles. This is then removed before the skin is stretched back and stitched up. On occasion, the Surgeon may also opt for liposuction to maximise results

Later Progress
In general, the patient will remain in the clinic for one or two days. For several days following surgery, the patient is likely to experience some discomfort. Inflammation often occurs and the patient will be advised to use abdominal support for a certain period of time. In addition, painkillers may be prescribed, although pain is likely to be experienced only for few weeks. Strenuous activity should be avoided. The scars will fade in time, although not completely.

What are the different types of tummy tuck?
There are two main types of tummy tuck available;
Complete abdominoplasty (full tummy tuck) – This is the most extensive tummy tuck available and is appropriate when there is a large amount of excess skin and fat across the whole abdomen. The surgeon makes a cut from right across, between the hip bones and will then contour the skin, muscle and tissue as required. Normally some degree of belly button reshaping is required.
Partial abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck) – This is a smaller tummy tuck, ideal for people whose excess skin and fat is below the belly button. An incision is made (as small as possible), normally at the knicker line (just above the pubic bone) and fat, skin and tissue contoured as required. Belly button reshaping is not normally required.
How long does the procedure take?
Depending on the complexity of the procedure, the surgery can take between 1 and 4 hours.
Are the results permanent?
Yes, as all results are permanent, however if you can still gain weight in the areas in which you had the procedure, so we advise you to keep to a healthy weight and exercise regularly. Pregnancy can also affect the results of the procedure; we advise that you postpone the procedure if you are planning children.
When can I go back to normal day-to-day activities?
We recommend that people take up to two weeks off work following the procedure (more if your job is particularly physical). Strenuous activities, heavy lifting and intense exercise should be avoided for about 6 weeks after your surgery.
Are there any alternatives to this surgery?
Depending on the results you are trying to achieve, there may be various surgical and non surgical options available to you. You can discuss this fully at your free consultation.
Can I combine this procedure with other surgery?
Yes, you can combine this procedure with other breast or body surgeries. You can discuss this in full at your free consultation.
Will I have altered sensation in the area?
Whenever skin is cut, nerves are also cut; this may result in altered sensation to the area, particularly at the incision site. All care will be taken to maintain sensation as much as possible.
What weight should I be for surgery?
You should be at a healthy weight for your height when you have surgery as this lowers risks related to anaesthetic. For the best aesthetic results, we recommend that you are at your ideal weight at the time of surgery as further weight loss or gain can change the results of your surgery.
When can I fly after the procedure?
You should check with your surgeon regarding safe timings of air travel following your surgery. Many airlines have their own protocols and you should inform your travel insurance company if you have had recent surgery.
We recommend that in the weeks after surgery, you are close to one of the locations Nu Cosmetic Clinic can refer you to in case you have any concerns, so foreign holidays may be best avoided until a few months after your procedure.
Am I too young/ too old for this procedure?
All clients must be at least 18 years of age to have surgery. We do not set an upper age limit for our procedures, suitability for surgery will be discussed at your free consultation with your surgeon.
Can I get a second opinion?
Yes, if you are at all unsure about what your surgeon has told you, we will be more than happy to refer you for a second free consultation with another surgeon.
