What is Laser Ablation Surgery
Excessive sweating is a common problem that affects both men and women. It can have a negative effect on work and social life, influencing people’s clothing choice and causing social anxiety and distress. Excessive sweating is caused when the body’s sweat glands become over stimulated, most commonly in the armpits, hands or feet. It’s not clear why some people develop the condition and others don’t, however genetic factors are thought to play a role, as two-thirds of sufferers have a family member who also has the condition.
Laser Ablation Surgery treatment works by “shutting off” the glands that are producing excessive sweat. Up to 80% of clients can expect a complete and permanent resolution to their excessive sweating following this treatment.
Before your Laser Ablation Surgery treatment, we request that you come in and have a chat to one of our surgeons to check your suitability and thoroughly explain the procedure.

The Procedure
Prior to the treatment, the particular glands that are responsible for the excessive production of sweat will be isolated using an iodine skin patch. Local anaesthetic is then used to numb the area completely. After ensuring that you have no feeling in the area, the surgeon will make a number of small incisions, approximately 5mm long. The fine bore laser is then inserted into these incisions and used to destroy the overactive glands; these gland are then removed with suction.
Later Progress
The treatment is mildly uncomfortable and the laser has been described as feeling like “pin pricks.” You may wish to take analgesia such as paracetamol prior to treatment to minimize any discomfort. Following the procedure, a compression dressing will be applied to aid healing and minimize any discomfort. This will stay in place for a few days, after which you can attend the clinic for a dressing change and review.
All of your aftercare is included in your package, meaning you can relax, safe in the knowledge that all your follow up appointments, dressings, any required medications and much more is covered by your comprehensive aftercare programme.
